We organize to change the world. We organize, do some things, and the world doesn’t change. So, we need to learn and change, too. In short, in order to change the world, we need a discipline of learning.
The Transformative Collaboration framework developed by the Ulex Project provides an essential tool to think about collaboration. They present collaboration as a transformative process at the societal level, movement level, organizational level, interpersonal level and personal level.
We recommend the following checklist used as part of the presentation of Transformative Collaboration.
1. Establishing Vision and Purpose
Setting intentions and orienting our action around what really matters to us and the world we live in
2. Attending the Group Formation
Creating a culture that reflects our values and supports effective collaboration
3. Using an Action-Learning Approach
Check the Action Learning Cycle framework.
4. Understanding Participatory Process
Drawing in the wisdom of the group and ensuring the whole remains greater than the sum of the parts
5. Balancing Task-Process-Relationship
Using key systems based concepts in designing our organisations and groups
6. Working with Power
Transforming it when it becomes dysfunctionally entrenched, distributing it effectively and using it responsibly
7. Making Decisions Well
Applying appropriate methods in ways that support accountability, creativity and initiative
8. Working with Conflict
9. Working with Teams and “Types”
Harnessing diversity, playing to strengths, and helping each other to bring our best
10. Strategic Thinking and Planning
Going from vision to pathways of effective action
11. Strengthening Self- and Collective Care
Exploring how we make our work together a context for individual growth and development
12. Skillful Communication
Recognising key elements that enable dialogue, sharing and bring the best out from each other
13. Cultivating Awareness and Emotional Literacy
Experiencing how attention training, mindfulness and emotional intelligence can contribute to effective collaboration
