The practical challenges of working across difference

In All In, in the section §5.3. Implementation, we write

We need organizations in the movement dedicating themselves to specific scenarios and specific grand strategies.

This is going to be difficult to handle. For this work, we will do two things: (1) We will really believe in the likelihood of one specific scenario and apply a grand strategy that fits it. We will mobilize resources and take risks. (2) Simultaneously, we will have a movement-level approach, which means we will work with groups who are betting – from our viewpoint – on the wrong scenario and wasting resources on the wrong strategy. So, we will put contingencies around our convictions.

This implies an awareness of the movement landscape in which we live, and investing time and effort in mobilizing this awareness into strategy as well as active solidarity.

Movement Learning Catalyst, a joint project of European Alternatives, European Community Organising Network, Ulex Project and activist researchers at the National University of Ireland Maynooth, produced a Guide to Learning Systemic Change. In this Guide, we want to highlight the following learning activity titled “The practical challenges of working across difference”.

*

This 90-minute activity explores challenges of collaboration across diverse movements. Participants identify practical obstacles such as linguistic barriers, conflicting audiences, and resource competition. They assess familiarity with other movements, seeking ways to enhance mutual understanding. The activity also probes existing initiatives facilitating cross-movement solidarity, encouraging collective exploration and potential joint efforts.
