Exploring Models of Transformation

In All In, we use the movement typology introduced by Eric Olin Wright who identifies three models of transformation: rupture, inside-the-system, outside-the-system. We further claim that these, even though they live in the same larger movement ecosystem, are incompatible to work together in the long-term. Instead, we claim that our current context and task require us to invest in the ruptural movement sub-ecosystem.

We further claim that we should look at the other models of transformation as complementary to our strategy. So, incompatibility does imply a need for certain distancing but it doesn’t imply denying indirect reciprocal influence as well as contribution.

How can we explore this “complementarity”?

Movement Learning Catalyst, a joint project of European Alternatives, European Community Organising Network, Ulex Project and activist researchers at the National University of Ireland Maynooth, produced a Guide to Learning Systemic Change. In this Guide, we want to highlight the following learning activity titled “Ecology of Strategies”.

This 90-minute exercise aims to explore diverse transformative strategies within social movements, emphasizing the shift from antagonistic attitudes to appreciating complementarity. Participants categorize themselves based on strategic affinity based on Eric Olin Wright’s typology and engage in playful critiques and appreciations of other approaches, fostering understanding of complementarities of different approaches and shift from divisive attitudes to collaborative movement building.
