All In Workshop at the Festival of Revolutions: “Doing our part”

Saturday, May 9th, 11am – 12h30 GMT+1 / 10am – 11:30am UTC

On the 9th of May, All In will join the Festival of Revolutions, which will take place online, from 7:00 to 19:00 UTC.

From 10:00 to 11:30 UTC, Alice Gato and Thibaut Cantet will host the workshop “Doing our part” – How the strategy tools we are using can prevent us from strategizing for revolution.

In the last decades, revolution has become growingly a protest chant, rather than something to do. This is a consequence of the domination of non-revolutionary theories of change and Movement Action Plans designed to create a change in the system, but not system change. This process is directly connected to the overwhelming strength of the capitalist system and frailty of alternatives.

Some tools we are accustomed to using adopt a movement ecology approach to justify that we all have our “part” to play in the big picture. Which part are we doing? Part of what? If we don’t know, we’re doing our part of capitalism. And this is exactly what some of this highly influential tools are training us to be part of.

On this session, we will look at some of the tools that the movement (especially the European Climate Justice Movement) has been explicitly or implicitly using – such as Bill Moyer’s Movement Action Plan or the complementarity of different theories of change – to explore how they train us to limit our thinking to reformist terms, to mechanical terms and without structural class conflict considerations. We will, of course, present alternative tools for thinking in revolutionary terms, just as the climate crisis demands of us.
